Follow the shores of the Mediterranean from
Camargue Gardoise. Your first discovery will be
Aigues-Mortes, a citadel encircled by the salt marshes which separate it from Grau du Roi Port Camargue. The seafront at le
Grau du Roi Port Camargue offers nearly 18 km of beaches: vast expanses of sand and dunes including the superb Espiguette beach, and Port Camargue, the resort with the biggest marina in Europe.
Then there’s
La Grande Motte,
the imposing capital of water sports with its distinctive architecture. Many buildings are pyramidal in form, creating an undulating skyline. Just 10 km from Montpellier is
Palavas-les-Flots with its
7 km of beaches where fishermen will sell you their catches of fresh fish and seafood.
Following the curve of the Gulf of Lion, you will be seduced by
Sète,
a maritime city full of character and the biggest fishing port on the Mediterranean, situated at the foot of Mont Saint-Clair. The broad ribbon of sand and dunes around the
Etang de Thau, will lead you to
Agde,
“the black pearl of the Mediterranean”, and its maritime development,
the Cap d’Agde with
8 marinas all dedicated the pleasures of the sea.
Below
Narbonne, between sea and marshes, is
Gruissan our next destination. This family resort is famous for its village of chalets on stilts. Nestling next to the
Etang de Leucate, with the plain of Roussillon and the Massif du Canigou in the background, is
Port-Barcarès, a modern lakeside town which shares this portion of the coast with
Canet-Plage and
Saint-Cyprien. With their pretty expanses of fine sand, they are the preferred resorts of the Perpignan locals.
You will be justifiably impressed by
the amount of tourist accommodation (especially the camp sites) on offer in
Argelès-sur-Mer. You will also love its 10 km of beaches and coves. Beyond the beach of Racou is the start of t
he Côte Vermeille
A magnificent summer can be spent here in the seaside
villages dotted along the coast as far as
Cerbère: shining
Collioure with its artistic soul; Port-Vendres, a large and very active fishing port, full of character; and
Banyuls with its palm trees and brightly coloured houses.
