    What's on at the châteaux of Midi-Pyrénées

    War machines, actors in costume, children's games, faithfully reproduced gardens and interiors, introductory sessions in heraldry and medieval cookery: many of the châteaux of Midi-Pyrénées offer much more than a guided tour, using no end of imaginative ways to make them even more attractive.

    In this, Aveyron stands out with the Route des Seigneurs du Rouergue, an association of 23 medieval châteaux that go that extra mile in offering visitor experiences and events that go far beyond the standard guided tour. 
    For example, the Château de Calmont d’Olt (11th to 15th century) brings to life the art of warfare in the Middle Ages. Experts in medieval culture are on hand at the castle, which has a breathtaking panoramic view of Espalion and the Lot Valley. With crossbow demonstrations, real firings of a catapult and bombard, and coin striking, it feels like you're really in the Middle Ages !

      Between Rodez and Conques, the Château du Colombier (14th century) has a medieval-style live animal collection and medieval garden that you can wander around, and also offers introductory sessions in the secrets of plants and calligraphy. Not far from there, the Château de La Servayrie, which has been remarkably restored, takes you on a journey from the 12th to the 17th century through a series of unrivalled recreated scenes.
