A large part of Occitania / Pyrenees-Mediterranean is taken up by its 6 Regional Nature Parks: the Grands Causses, Haut Languedoc, Pyrénées Ariégeoises, Causses du Quercy, Pyrénées Catalanes and la Narbonnaise en Méditerranée.
They alone account for 20% of the surface area of Occitania / Pyrenees-Mediterraneans, and that figure will soon increase with the addition of the Aubrac Regional Nature Park, which is in the process of coming into being. This Park will extend across part of two regions: Occitania / Pyrenees-Mediterranean, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
The people who live and work in these areas are involved in the initiatives introduced by the Parks to ensure respectful and sustainable development. The Parks are keen to promote high-quality tourism which is fully integrated into people's daily lives and designed to promote an experience and understanding of the Parks' unique and vulnerable assets.
The low-impact, sustainable practice of hiking is an excellent way to explore these peaceful corners of paradise criss-crossed by scores of footpaths.
What's more, the Parks organise their calendars of events and activities to help you make the most of your time there. Among the events and activities on offer there are for example visits to honey and cheese producers, daytime and evening wildlife-spotting trips, storytelling evenings in the warmth of a mountain hut, guided walks, themed excursions and other new things to try that will add a touch of adventure and a sense of fulfilment to your holiday.
