The fortified village of Fourcès owes its originality to its circular shape. Its history and heritage make it one of the jewels of the land of Armagnac. To see it, go to the department of Gers, 55 Km northwest of Auch.
Fourcès is usually classified as a bastide but it is really a castelnau, a form of habitat preceding the bastides. The village is immediately attractive for its beauty and peace. Entwined by the green line of the Auzoue, a pretty river full of fish, Fourcès opens like a living history book.
The round square occupies the place of the castle motte where the original castle was built, but destroyed in the 15th century. People gather here in the shade of the plane trees to enjoy themselves, play pétanque, attend concerts, hunting for antiques in the flea market (second Sunday of each month from May to November) or the old book market (3rd Sunday in July) or smell the intoxicating scents of the flower market (last weekend in April). This is considered to be the most beautiful in the Midi-Pyrénées.
Around the square, the medieval houses with oak jambs keep watch, side by side with more recent 17th and 18th century residences. Their stone arches house a small shopping and craft precinct (antiques, flea market, restoration of antique furniture) and the shop of the craftwork designers._Along the river banks, a 15th century castle, a magnificent defence building, houses a luxury hotel. Another square, the Place des Cornières, is a lovely sight with its backdrop of greenery and old houses.
The clock tower (13th century), the museum of ancient Gascon trades, the well stocked arboretums and the bucolic ramparts add to the pleasure of staying in this Gascon village of 300 inhabitants, lively and proud of a heritage that they have worked hard to improve.
